Traditional Irish Recipes to try this St. Patrick's Day

The month of March is largely known for a little holiday with four-leaf clovers and pots of gold. Although you can find TONS of green food and gold foil wrapped chocolate coins, we thought we’d take a different route for our St. Patrick’s Day post. So we scoured Pinterest to create a list of our favorite authentic (or close to) St. Patrick’s Day food ideas for you to try out on or leading up to March 17th. Disclosure: There are no Shamrock Shake recipes on this list. Here are the tasty recipes we found worthy of a real Irish St. Patrick’s Day gathering.

Irish Stew

A true Irish family recipe, this hearty stew is perfect for a cool March day. With chunks or lamb, carrots and potatoes, it will keep even the hungriest families full for hours.

Colcannon Potato Soup

This one is a variation on a traditional Irish recipe, but it looked too good to pass up. While the consistency of traditional colcannon is closer to mashed potatoes, this recipe creates a soup version by mixing in chicken stock.

Shepherd’s Pie

You’ve definitely heard of it, and most of you have even tried it. Shepherd’s pie is one of the best known Irish classics, and it’s essential to any St. Patrick’s Day dinner. Rumor has it, it’s been around since 1791.

Dublin Coddle

An easy recipe that can be made in one pot, Dublin Coddle is made with sausage and, yes, potatoes. Make this one ahead of time; it can be in the oven for up to four or five hours!

Irish Soda Bread

This traditional Irish soda bread is commonly paired with soups, chowders and stews. This is a fun recipe to make with kids in preparation for St. Patrick’s Day. In fact, many families in Ireland still make this bread daily!

Irish Shortbread

A sweet, crispy shortbread cookie is the best way to end any meal or the perfect afternoon snack. Made with quality butter, these cookies are a must at any St. Patrick’s Day gathering.

Irish Apple Cake

This Irish dessert is stuffed with tart apples and all of the other fixings for a delicious cake. It is topped off with a creamy custard sauce. If you’re looking for a decadent Irish treat, this is your cake.

Irish Coffee

If your St. Patrick’s Day weather is going to be cold, you’ll need this recipe. Also, the link for Irish Coffee shares the fascinating story of its origination; it’s worth reading.
